603 - Bloomberg Business news is working ok.
400 - Is now Kaleidescope and it is ok.
601 - The Box, tries to come in but does not.
602 - Seems to be Classic Sports now, it does not come on. Says US on diag. B.
600 - Says MP so that is not expected to come on.
580 - Does not come on.

Looks like someone changed a few channels around there.

Here's what I can receive:

GE-1 (W1)

750, 751 GEMS
752 Color bars
753 'Please wait a moment..., We are processing your request' screen.
Authorization status: MP
754 Outdoor Life Network
755 Hero Productions Teleport - Miami color bars
756 Spanish audio

G7

580 'Please wait a moment..., We are processing your request' screen.
Authorization status: MS
600 'Please wait a moment..., We are processing your request' screen.
Authorization status: ZK
601 Brief flash of 'The Box', then blank screen. Authorization status: FP
602 'Please wait a moment..., We are processing your request' screen.
Authorization status: US
603 Bloomberg TV. Authorization status: FP

Before on G7, I was receiving:

Bloomberg TV - VC 580
Kaleidoscope - VC 601
The Box - VC 800

My unit had v43 software out of the box, and now has v61. I'm showing 1517 channels.

OK we now understand the problem with these channels on G7 (Bloomburg, Box, & Kaleidoscope) & W1 (GEMS). It has nothing to do with the number of channels displayed in Options-6-5, nor with the previous version number as speculated here.

The problem relates to the fact that these channels are configured for commercial only. Even though they are in FP mode, they were not specifically intended (nor configured) to be received by the consumer receiver (4DTV). The old firmware (anything prior to 061) was not able to display channels in this mode. One of the enhancements of 061 was to allow channels in this mode to be viewed; however, there is a catch.

If you have Parental Lock enabled, the 4DTV receiver will not display channels in this mode. The purpose of this is to protect young eyes from accidentally seeing adult programming that may drop into FP mode because of uplinking problems. If you enable Parental Locks, it is assumed that you have children in the home, so the receiver blocks these channels from being displayed.

So if you want to receive these channels, you will have to disable Parental Locks while watching these channels, and then re-enable locks when done (assuming you want them enabled). And, you have to be at version 061.

I'm glad to see that this has been worked out finally. I had the chance to see 2 different receivers which had version 27 on them before the update and both had the lock turned on and did not receive these extra channels. Here is what I witnessed....

Go to options 3 then line 6 says on-off. Turn it off. If you press "go-back" it will turn on the locks so press view after you turn off your locks. This has happened on one unit that I know of. When we tried to re-create this scenario it worked properly so maybe it just needed to be done this way one time. Try it and see.

Subject: Re: Starz package west feeds
Date: Wed, 24 Dec 1997 19:10:39 -0500

There are some channels on G1 (digital, 4dtv) that are transmitted extremely close to the mininum threshold quality value required for decent reception. Those channels appear to involve the West feeds. I could not receive several G1 digital channels, HBO and STARZ until I tweaked my system. I keep mine tweaked because I have both C-band and KU- band. KU-band is not as forgiving as C-band and requires a "peaked" system. The cure for my system was a 3/4 turn adjustment to the declination angle.

During their so-called testing period, there were times when either the East or West Feed was available but not both.

How are you subscribing to the digital Starz/Encore package? Is your analog provider also authorizing STARZ/Encore similiar to HBO/CINEMAX. My Starz/ENCORE analog provider is Netlink. I am going to call them right now to see if they provide this service. The STARZ/ENCORE package channels have indicated that I am not a subscriber for the last two weeks.

Most all of them should have Starz/Encore & Showtime/TMC. See below for what services each provider currently authorizes. The only one that has everything is NPS.

HBO Direct:

Superstar/Netlink:

The version 27 seemed to have a few problems most of which were ironed out. The version 43 4dtv was better and with the new software upgrade to version 61 it seems to be real decent. Some version 27's are not getting all the channels available like Gems and some other digital channels on G7 but it is not a real widespread problem from what I've seen in this NG. As far as GI/Next Level all the receivers are the same except for the software version number.

If you have an older lnb, I would consider upgrading to a newer one. C-Band is not too bad, a 20 degree lnb will do a good job, for ku a .7 will do fine. The biggest thing you will need to remember is that your dish needs to be aligned correctly for digital. Analog signals did not need the exactness which the digital signals must have.

Subject: Satellite Changes for 4DTV
From: 4dtv@nlvl.com

Date: Mon, 1 Dec 1997 23:25:33 -0800

Hello everyone,

I wanted to let everyone know that we are going to make the following changes Wed or Thu of this week for the GE-3/S3 satellite situation. For the additional satellites, we are working on detailed plans to add these in the next several weeks and need your input (see below).

For the GE-3 satellite, we are going to change the name of S3 and S8 to W3 and W8 respectively. The locations will stay the same, but the transponder definitions will change for W8 to reflect the GE-3 Ku configuration. If you're using S8 for this now and have fine tuned some transponders, you will have to fine tune again after this occurs.

For the old S3 (Spacenet 3) satellite, we are going to change the name of S2 and S7 to S3 and S8 respectively. The locations will change to the 83 degree location where S3 is parked rather than the 69 degree location where S2 was originally located. The transponder configuration is identical for S2 & S3 (C & Ku), so no changes are needed in the configuration. This plan was chosen because we know many of you are already using S2 for the old S3, and this would be the most transparent implementation.

For the new satellites, we plan to add those in the next several weeks, but want to get feedback from you, the experts. Even though the new software in the 4DTV receiver can accept up to 80 satellites, we do not want to overload the memory by installing satellites that are not needed because either they can not be seen from North America or nothing is on them. So we are asking for feedback from you, the bird watchers, to determine which satellites to download into the receiver. Please send me e-mail (I may miss a response here since news servers are not always that reliable) with your preferences in priority order. Please don't send me mail saying "add them all" and don't just list them all in the mail. Give me a list of the satellites you actually use to find programs (C or Ku).

For those more adventurous, it may be helpful if you provide some details on the frequency plan for the satellites with non-standard frequency plans. Sometimes it is difficult to map these frequency plans into the transponder definition tables and this may be helpful. If we are not able to map this easily, we may have to use a generic plan like the KA, KB, and KC plans. While you're at it, please provide feedback on which you prefer... Should we shoe-horn a non-standard plan into a somewhat standard plan, or should we just stick with the generic approach (but still use specific designators like P3 for Panamsat 3 for example)?

Please e-mail response to 4dtv@nlvl.com

Thanks for your valuable feedback... We are listening, even if it sometimes seems like we are not. Sometimes there are valid reasons, which you all may not be aware of, why things can not be done exactly as you wish. One very simple reason is that you can't please everybody, no matter how hard you try.

I will pass the 4DTV IRD suggestions on to the receiver group and will try to answer the programming ones now.

>1. The ability to tune inverted video - specifically WMNB on SBS-5. Has
>this been fixed already? It obviously can be done in software because
>all Ku video - except WMNB - is inverted wrt C-Band anyway.

No, but there is a work-around to get this signal to work. Check out this site for details:

>7. Speaking of the software updates, could you please change the time?
>Some of us night owls are watching TV at 2:00 AM Eastern (Letterman on

>Say 4:00AM, 8:00AM, and 12:00N?

This actually starts at 2:00 am Pacific time and I believe runs for a period of time, but I'm not sure of the details. I will pass this suggestion on.

>8. The option to have variable audio out so that when watching TV at a
>remote set, you don't need to use two remotes: the 4DTV remote and the
>TV's remote for the volume.

The 4DTV remote is a 3-in-1 remote (Sat, TV, VCR) and allows you to program it for your TV, so it can control the volume of the TV.

>11. Could you please contact someone at Fox Sports about insuring that

>all of the NBA League Pass backhauls available to 4DTV owners. The people

I can talk to someone about this, but we have very little influence over these decisions. Fox Sports is owned by Rupert Murdock, who also owns their own conditional access system (News Datacom), which is used for DSS, so their digital plans may not include 4DTV. You can try talking to Fox Sports Direct, which is dedicated to the big dish business, but often they have to live with decisions made by the larger corporation, Fox Sports, and the sports leagues, neither of which give a lot of attention to the big dish. We will keep you posted.

>12. Also, how about contacting the CBC to insure that their signals are
>DC II ITC so that both StarChoice owners in Canada and 4DTV owners in
>the US can continue to watch their programming after their analog feeds
>disappear. Maybe you could even talk NTV into providing a DC II signal.

This is a decision between StarChoice and the CBC. I don't believe we have much influence, but can pass this comment along. Same for NTV.

>13. Please convince someone at the BBC to upgrade their digicipher I
>signal on G1R to DC II and make it available to 4DTV owners.

We have sales people doing this all the time. I will ask about the BBC.

>14. What's the status of the TCI HITS feeds on Galaxy 7? I'm especially
>interested in Classic Sports Network and Ovation.

We are in active discussions with both of these programmers, but I can not estimate the availability. I stopped making predictions for things I have no control over. Starz and Showtime were good examples of that. In my wildest dreams, I never thought it would take more than a few weeks to get these going but it took from July to October or November before they were finally available.

>15. Can you contact someone at GEMS about making their signal on W1 available?

We are in discussions with GEMS and they are interested. Same rule about availability above applies here. FYI, we are also in discussions with Kaleidoscope, TV Food Network, Spice Networks, Discovery Networks, America's Health Network, BET, Viewer's Choice, Request TV, and CourTV (which is complete, except for the packagers), but again no estimate for availability.

Hope that answers your questions. As I said, I will forward your suggestions for the IRD, but don't expect a reply on them. It is too premature to discuss future generations of the 4DTV receiver.

We were able to get the information for these channels, so they were added to the map tonight. However, Ovation is not ITC, so it is not viewable at this time. If they do go ITC, then you can see it at G7-600. The others are ITC, so they are viewable now.

> If I order one from a dealer, how can I be sure that it comes with the
> latest software, etc.? What should I ask for? I've seen some posts that
> dealers may be shipping older sets.

We have been encouraging our dealers to use the FIFO inventory method to rotate the older stock, but it really doesn't matter because the only difference between the older units and the newer ones is the software and channel maps and those are updated via satellite.

It is ok if you get an older set because you will automatically get the software download after the unit is installed. This download takes a couple days of leaving your receiver off at night before 2:00 am Pacific time. You know you are at the latest version if Line H of Options-6-5 says 0061.

After we switch from an opportunity download to a forced download (described in an earlier post), the download will become part of the dealer installation because the IRD will be forced to receive the download immediately when tuned to G9-780. This will occur around the end of Dec. or early Jan. When it does, you should verify with the dealer that the download was performed as part of the installation and verify the version number on Line H.

And StarChoice lets us sell their model 921 - which is a 4dtv unit, and they publicize the fact it receives c band and other ku band birds. And they let us dealers sell the 921\4dtv unit cheap enough to make it worthwhile to the consumer. I think everyone should buy one (hint hint). But we can't sell the VCII+ board which goes in it. At least this week, next week could be a whole new ballgame.

Great Timing! We just loaded several new satellites tonight. We loaded PAS 5 C-band (P5), Anik E1 Ku-band (A1), and several new generic satellites. There are now 6 generic Ku-band satellites (KA - KF) and 5 generic C-band satellites (CA - CE) for programming Atlantic satellites. We shuffled some things around and made room for Galaxy 10 (C & Ku band) and a few more specific satellites, which you will see in the future.

Also, look at T4-800 for BET on Jazz, and T4-970 for Adam & Eve, 971 for Spice, and 972 for Spice Hot, which are currently scrambled, but should be available via PPV or subscription soon.

These are generic satellites, which can be used to program any other satellite you want that is not already installed in the map. For example, you could use CA for Intelsat 605 or KA for Intelsat K. The reason for 56 channels is to maximize flexibility for the various Ku-band channel formats. Channels 1-26 are Horizontal and 31-56 are Vertical polarity.
